The Director General and Inspector General of Police is the head of the police department in the Karnataka state. The Director’s General of Police, Additional Director’s General of Police and Inspector General of Police works under DG and IGP. 

There are 6 Police Commissionerates in Karnataka. Bengaluru City Police Commissioner is of the rank of Additional Director General of Police. All the other commissionersare of the rank of Deputy  Inspector’s General of Police. 

There are 7 ranges in Karnataka headed by Inspector’s General’s of Police. Each range consists of 3 to 6 districts. The districts are headed by Superintendent of police  and are called as unit officers.

Law and Order

Additional Director General of Police is the head for Law andorder section in Karnataka state. The main objective of this wing is to maintain the law and order situation, to protect public property to maintain judicial safety for SC-ST cases, communal riots, mobs and other riots cases, Law and order wing will be the custodian unit.

Intelligence Wing

The Intelligence Wing is headed by a Director, State Intelligence Wing of the rank of the Additional Director General of Police(ADGP), under his supervision the Additional Director (Inspector General of Police-IGP), the Joint Director (Deputy Inspector General of Police-DIGP), the Deputy Director IPS & non-IPS (Superintendent of Police), the Assistant Director(AD) (Deputy Superintendent of Police-DySP), the Chief Intelligence Officer (Police Inspector), the Intelligence Officer (Police Sub-Inspector), the Assistant Intelligence Officer (Assistant Sub-Inspector), the Senior Intelligence Assistant (Head Constables/Armed Head Constables), the Intelligent Assistants (Constables/Armed Police Constables) are working.

The 5 Intelligence Divisions are located at Bengaluru, Mysuru, Mangaluru, Kalaburgi and Belgavi these intelligence units are headed by the Deputy Directors (Superintendent of Police).

Crime & Technical Services Wing

This wing is headed by an Officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police, Crime and Technical Services. This wing also includes, Finger Print Bureau, Forensic Scientific Laboratory.

Police Computer Wing

Maintenance of Records is an integral part of the Police Station work, when such maintenance of records became a burden to the department then computerisation of all the police station records was initiated under a new and modern system of functioning. Initially the photographs of Criminals, their history sheets, finger prints were computerised and subsequently computerised the salary bills of police staff. The SP rank officer was heading this unit initially. Presently an Officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police heads the Police Computer Wing.

Presently Police Departments Computerization is managed by Police Computer Wing, coordinating all IT tasks with the available technical knowledge in the department and also development and deployment of Police IT ERP solution.

Since 1977 State Crime Records Bureau has compiled information of Crimes, Criminals and provided information (within in State and nationally) required to collate crime statistics and classified crimes under guidance of Additional Director General of Police, Police Computer Wing.

Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

This Special unit is headed by an Officer of the Rank of Director General of Police. He will oversee the work of all the specialized investigation units like, Crime Investigation Department, the Forest Cell and the unit dealing with Economic Officences and the Cyber Police Station.

Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP)

This wing is headed by an officer of the rank of Additional Director General of Police, who is assisted by an Inspector General and two Deputy Inspectors General of Police at the Police Head Quarters. The Karnataka State Reserve Police at present consists of 12 Battalions. 4 Battalions have their head quarters at Bengaluru and each at Mysuru, Belagavi, Kalaburgi, Mangaluru, Shivamogga, Shiggav Tumakuru and Hassan

Communication, Logistic and Modernisation Wing.

This wing is headed by an Additional Director General of Police. The wing consists of a Police Wireless Unit headed by a Superintendent of Police and Motor Transport Organisation headed by a Superintendent of Police.

Police Training

This wing is headed by Director General of Police, Training. He is assisted by Inspector General of Police and Deputy Inspector General of Police.

Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement

The Additional Director General of Police, Civil Rights Enforcement is the head of the wing. He is assisted by an Inspector General of Police, a Deputy Inspector General of Police and a Superintendent of Police at the headquarters. There are 6 field units, each headed by a Superintendent of Police, at the police Ranges located at Bangalore, Mangalore, Davangere, Belgaum, Gulbarga and Mysore. The Directorate monitors registration and investigation of the cases registered under the Protection of Civil Rights Act 1955 and (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The Directorate generally works as the watch dog of the rights and benefits extended to the SC/STs and also keeps close vigil on those people other than SC/STs who avail the benefits meant for SC/STs.

Planning & Modernization

This wing is headed by an Officer of the rank of Inspector General of Police, Planning and Modernisation. The consolidated proposals of the Police Department are being submitted to the Government for sanctions through this wing.

Police Housing and Police Welfare

This wing is headed by an Officer of the rank of Inspector General of Police.The Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd and the main objective of the Police Housing Project is to build innovative buildings for better connectivity with the Police Community. 

The following welfare activities are carried out by the Police Welfare Division in the State of Karnataka.

  3. Police Residential Schools
  4. Benevolent fund-Education Fund
  5. Health Trust of Retired Police Officers
  6. Health Scheme…(Arogya Bhagya Yojane) 

Internal Security Division :

Internal Security Division has been created by Government of Karnataka, vide order No. HD 208 POP 2008, dated 12.12.2008. This Division is headed by Additional Director General of Police. Created with an objective to collect Actionable Intelligence and carry out operations. To collect intelligence having a bearing on Anti-National and Subversive Activities like Terrorist Activity, Hawala, FICN, Narco Terrorism, Organised Crimes, having an internal security dimension. This specialized unit complements the jurisdiction and local police and does not compete with them.
The Internal Security Division has following units.

3. Anti Terrorist Cell and Vital Installations
4. Centre for Counter Terrorism
5. Regulation of Private Security
6. Karnataka State Industrial Security Force (KSISF)
